National Kangaroo Day

When the girls were really little, they'd ask me about the beauty mark on my cheek. I told them the truth -- that it was a kangaroo bite, of course.

Then they asked how I got it, so I told them the story of how I was holding a baby kangaroo, and he was trying to kiss me, but he was a baby, and didn't really know how to do things like that, so he bit me instead.

They loved the story, and asked for it over and over and over, until I was very tired of telling it. So eventually, a couple of years ago, I told them that February 29th was the only day I'd tell the story. Instead of forgetting about it, they remembered, and during the last month, they've been asking with increased frequency as February 29th approaches.

So far, they haven't asked me yet today, but there's still plenty of time left.

I began National Kangaroo Day by sending the girls off to church with their father and going for a quote-run-unquote. I like to call it a run, even though there's far more walking than running going on. But today, it was really not even a quote-run-unquote, as I pretty much walked the whole time.

It was gorgeously sunny this morning, though, and because it was light out, instead of dark like when I usually go out, I didn't have to stay within range of the streetlights, so I wandered around the trails that run though the wetlands area behind the girls school. I was expecting to come out in a completely different place than I did, so I think I need to see if there's a map of them somewhere.

I got my hair cut yesterday, quite substantially, as it has been driving me insane for weeks now. I'm really happy with the new cut. It's a little bit above shoulder length, and has some long choppy layers. I had to really convince the girl who cut it that yes, I did want that much cut off. I think they must get some angry people who get unhappy with getting a lot cut off, but I love it.

After my hair cut yesterday, I found myself with a friend for each of the girls, and we all went to see the tween movie 'Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen'. It was cute enough, and then we came back and had tacos for dinner before taking the extra children home.

The girls are watching Ghostbusters right now, and I think after that we may need to go outside again. It's not so common to get a sunny weekend day at this time of year that you can waste it by staying inside all day.

Abby Explains It All

The other day, we were shopping at Target, and I was lingering over a pretty flowering plant. She saw what I was doing, and started telling me how it was.

"You know you'll just kill it," she said.

I protested. "It looks very sturdy!"

She wasn't buying that. "Until you get it home!"

I didn't get the plant. Really, it's probably better that way.

Later that weekend, we had run out of cat food for the cats. The cats were not particularly pleased about this development, so we were at the store again, looking at our cat food options.

They were out of the big bag of the usual stuff, so we had to figure out what to do. There seemed to be a million different slightly different varieties, and some of them had hairball stuff, and some had weight loss stuff. I wondered, aloud, about getting them some of that.

This resulted in a discussion about how to gradually get them to accept the weight loss cat food. We talked about it for a while, and then I started to feel bad about putting the poor kitties on a diet, so I said, "Do you really think they need to lose weight?"

She just looked at me.

I bought the diet cat food.
